When I walked in to watch Joe Wright’s latest movie, The Darkest Hour, I wanted to be unconventional and unlike my usual self, so I selected and compiled the gum candies of my movie munching bag with meticulous care; there were maximum two each of mammals, fish, molluscs, reptiles and other crawlers and creepers but when it came to fried eggs, tiny hearts, wedding rings and croissants, I placed three pieces of each in my bag. Cherry and Cola bottle shaped gumdrops have always been my favourites so I must confess I hesitated for a while before deciding just how much I should include, but in the end I just kept throwing them in without counting. As it always happens, this illustrious gathering was crowned by the Smurfs.
As a matter of principle, I never start munching right at the beginning of the movie regardless of whether it is popcorn or some sweets. This time around I also managed to uphold the old tradition although it wasn’t all that hard to do since I was literally mesmerized by Gary Oldman’s performance. So much so, that for a while I never even thought of the fruit gum army skulking in the darkness of my paper bag. The film takes us back to May 1940, when the nazis were forcing the leading European powers on their knees. Churchill is faced with one of the most important (and probably the most famous) dilemmas of his life and perhaps our whole history: he must decide whether to agree to a peace treaty that would be extremely detrimental to Great Britain or to stand up against nazi Germany and fight against fascist occupation until the bitter end.

Watching the images go flashing by I am also hesitating for a while but finally I am letting my hand gently slip into my paper bag and pick out a jelly bear; I am about to raise its head to my lips when Churchill’s words jerk me back into reality: „You can not reason with a Tiger when your head is in its mouth.” I felt instantly ashamed of myself and promptly replaced the frightened little creature into the bag to join the rest of the pack. For a brief moment I am thinking about how wonderfully easy it is to live in our world, sipping coke watching how great historical figures brought real decisions from a velvet chair, seeing them in pain, blood, sweat and tears as they struggle to save their country from occupation. We, on the other hand, lock ourselves into the prison of our privileged existence that is full of pitiful, trivial little problems without ever really thinking about the gravity of their decisions. Well of course, it is possible to change everything, including attitudes, and the beginning of the year is always the best time for making a change. 🙂 Happy year’s start everybody!

Rendhagyó módon egy jó adag gumicukorral a kezemben ültem be Joe Wright legújabb filmjére: A legsötétebb óra –ra. A zacskó tartalmát magam válogattam össze nagy gonddal: emlősökből, halakból, puhatestűekből, hüllőkből és egyéb csúszó-mászókból maximum kettő darabot; tükörtojásból, szívecskéből, karikagyűrűből, croissont-ból 3-3 darabot helyeztem a zacskóba. A film 1940 májusába repít bennünket, amikor is a náci csapatok sorra kényszerítik térdre Európa nagyhatalmait.
